Ok, so I know that the random LFD tool must use some form of GS or AiL (average item level) to decide whether it'll let you queue for heroics but I can't seem to find that number anywhere. I really suck at googling (as impossible as that seems) and can't find the info here, on the official forums, or anywhere else out on the net.
My guild is gonna carry me through for some gear so it doesn't matter really what I'm wearing, I just need to know what number I have to hit for it to let me in so I can spend as little gold as possible on rep and crafted gear.
If it makes any difference the toon in question is an Unholy DK.

It is not disclosed by Blizzard.

That's true but if someone can figure their AiL and keep checking the LFD while switching gear then maybe the threshold can be discovered.
It really doesn't matter now for this toon though cuz I upgraded my sigil and shoulders and all of a sudden I could queue for heroics! If it can be deduced, then cool. If not, then oh well.

It takes into account gear in your bags and bank.

That's the part that I hate. My offspec on my druid has blues and greens and it threw me into H PoS. I ended up having to get my better moonkin gear.

one thing I do, since I have multiple undergeared 80's is look at which heroics are locked in the lfd tool. just hit the pulldown menu with looking for specific dungeons. if you are being carried, just upgrade one item at a time till the heroics you want to run are unlocked. sounds like you already did this though.

My shaman at newly 80 had a GS of ~2400 and an average ilvl of about 173. I was able to get into all of the pre-ToC heroics and contribute quite well (2500+dps).
I could get into regular ToC around ilvl 190 and regular FoS around 200. However, I couldn't get into H-TOC until 210 and H-HoR is still unavailable to me at 218 and GS 4200.
However, I do have a lot of leftover packrat crap and levelling blues from an offspec Enhance set in my bank.
My paladin with an average ilvl of 224-ish and GS 4500 and mage ilvl 227/GS 4800 have no problem getting into H-HoR.

I did the ilvl200 Heroics in all BoE greens, so the avg ilvl for those is quite low.
WoWwiki says 160, but I don't know where that number came from.

Yeah, the AiL of my equipped gear when I noticed that I could queue for heroics was 172. Idk what the total was including the gear in my bags but it couldn't have that far off 172 since I only replaced 2 or 3 pieces.

HoR hc was unlocked for me on both paladin (tank) and rogue when GS exceeded about 4500-4600. dont know for the others tho, but still, tanking HoR hc at 4500GS? did not go well. but i have been grouped with healers in there with GS around 4200, and they seem to have a pure hell tbh.
Tresholds seem to adjust a bit +/-, but not much, and when it goes lower things get out of hand, and ugly, very, very quickly.
Edit: writing complete sentences makes things easier to read.

if you're being carried, and you have 5 people, you don't even need to randomly queue, you can just go right in at the instance portal
Yeah, but I wanted to start getting the Frosties from day 1.
